Taiwan's Scenic Heart: The Solo Traveler's Comprehensive Slow-Paced Guide

A chill trip for the not-so-young solo traveler!

So this is not just for a first-time traveler in Taiwan, but if you are somewhere in Asia, and would like to explore outside your country without a visa, then this is it.  This geographically small country has always been underrated, and unpopular among the other countries in Asia.  However, it boasts a lot of natural tourist spots, from mountains to the sea, and its authentic culture. And  apart from its origin, it has a lot of places that are atypical.

Taipei 101
Taipei 101

Taiwan is so accessible because it has a national train rail that takes you around the island.  It also has a central transportation hub in Taipei, where all public transport are available to take you to your destination anywhere in Taiwan.  It has two main cities with international airports- first is Taipei, which is located in the north of the island, and Kaohsiung in the south.  The two cities are only 1.5 to 2 hours away by commuting using the high-speed train (HSR).  Standard trains (TRA) will take you about 4.5 to 6 hours.

This itinerary guide is more of a recommendation for solo traveler, and a slow-paced trip within Taipei and its nearby cities.  The guided places are based on my experience which are not just suitable for solo travel but also for a group.  I also included a few must-visit tourist spots from credible travel sites (which I missed in my itinerary during my travel).

City Tour

You can stroll around the city in bus or train.   Mostly for sight-seeing,  picture taking and brace yourself for long walks.

The Magnificent North Coast Tour (My Top Pick!)

I’ve visited this route three times, and it still manages to amaze me! This tour combines incredible natural wonders, charming old towns, and unique cultural experiences. All stops are must-visits for sightseeing, shopping, and one-of-a-kind memories.

2. Jiufen Old Street: A Spirited Mountain Town

3. Shifen Old Town: Sky Lantern Wishes and Waterfall Hikes

This dual-attraction spot offers both a cultural thrill and a refreshing nature experience.

  • Sky Lantern Experience: Shifen’s old town is most famous for the tradition of lighting and flying a sky lantern right over the active train tracks!

    • The Experience: For around NT$200 (Note: prices can change), you select the colors (each representing different wishes like health or wealth), write your prayers and dreams on the sides, and then watch it ascend into the sky. Locals will help you with the process and even take great pictures and videos for you!

  • Shifen Waterfall: If you’re still up for more exploration, take a short hike to the majestic Shifen Waterfall.

    • The View: Often called the "Little Niagara of Taiwan," this is a perfect spot for a refreshing and scenic view of a broad, powerful cascade. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking, including stairs, to get the best viewing angles.

Exploring Nantou: The Scenic, Coastless Heart of Taiwan

Love is Taiwan't

Nantou County proudly holds the title of the "Heart of Taiwan," as it is the only county entirely landlocked, boasting no coastline. This geographical feature makes it intensely mountainous, creating the stunning, cool-climate scenery that draws countless tourists to its themed parks, beautiful gardens, and lush forests.

Here is a peek into my memorable trip to the mountainous heart of Taiwan, featuring two must-see attractions:

🐑 1. Cingjing Farm: Taiwan’s Little Switzerland

  • What it is: A high-altitude farm famous for its rolling green hills, refreshing air, and stunning views.

  • Why you should visit: The farm is home to the Green Green Grasslands, where sheep and other livestock roam freely. Watching the sheep-shearing show is a popular highlight. The alpine environment makes for picturesque walks and incredible photo opportunities.

  • My experience:  The drive up to Cingjing is an attraction in itself. Our journey involved winding uphill roads, offering spectacular sightseeing of the dramatic mountainous landscape. We visited in February, and I can attest—it was bone-chillingly cold! We even spotted remains of snow clinging to the side of the road. While the views were worth the trip, the cold was fierce! I had to retreat into the van to warm up after a short while.

  • Travel Tip: Pack layers and heavy-duty winter gear if visiting between December and March.

🏰 2. The Old England Manor: A Taste of Europe

  • What it is: Located near Cingjing Farm, this is a luxurious, Tudor-style manor designed to look exactly like a grand English estate. It operates as a high-end hotel and restaurant.

  • Why you should visit: Even if you aren't staying overnight, the Manor's architecture and grounds are an incredible sight. It's a prime spot for photography.

There are a lot more to see in Taiwan, aside from visiting museums and the city centre. After this first trip, you will yearn to explore more.  Pack your bags, secure your travel passes, and prepare to discover why this friendly island is truly called the "Heart of Asia." A moment of thanksgiving.  Practicing m indfulness is one stoic habit to appreciate your surroundings. Once you woke up, feel, see, and hear what are the things to be thankful for. I sometimes woke up from a loud bark of a dog or the sweet chirping of the birds outside my window, and I am simply thankful that I was able to hear those sounds. 2. Drink warm water.
